The intestinal ecosystem, balancing our health

What if our state of health were linked to the state of our intestines ? The idea is not that preposterous... In fact most of the body’s immune system is concentrated in the intestines and the nutrients and micronutrients that nourish all our cells are assimilated in the intestines.

Maintaining the health of our organism is a question of ensuring a proper balance in our intestinal ecosystem

Better understanding of the role of the intestines

The intestines are more than just a simple organ through which food passes : they play an essential role in digestion, the assimilation of nutrients and in the activity of the immune system. A good state of health therefore depends to a great extent on the intestinal ecosystem. As a consequence a dysfunction in this ecosystem may have a variety of consequences : digestive, joint or skin disorders, food intolerance or allergic reactions...

Preserving the intestinal ecosystem

The intestines are an extremely complex ecosystem in which three main elements (intestinal flora, nutrients and the host’s cells) are in constant contact and interact on :

  • the intestinal flora that allow digestion, protection against “bad” bacteria and strengthen the immune system.

  • the intestinal mucous membranes, which cover the digestive tract and represent an immense surface area for exchanges between the interior and exterior of the body.

  • the intestinal immune system, which assures the defence of the body to attack and tolerance of food.

The cells in the immune system distinguish bad bacteria from beneficial ones. However poorly managed stress, an unbalanced diet, medicinal treatments (antibiotics for example) may disturb the flora and weaken the body’s defence system. This is where probiotics can play a decisive role...
